1. Accuracy first, always
Speed is just accuracy repeated quickly. If you play a scale fast but sloppy, you're training your hands to make mistakes faster. Start at a tempo where every note is clean, even, and in tune — even if that feels embarrassingly slow.
Listen for three things on every pass: even rhythm (no rushing the easy notes), even tone (no notes louder than others), and clean transitions between notes. Fix those at slow speed and they'll carry up to fast speed automatically.
2. Use a metronome ladder
This is the single most effective trick for building speed:
- Find your perfect tempo — the fastest you can play the scale with zero mistakes.
- Play it cleanly three times in a row at that tempo.
- Bump the metronome up just 3–5 BPM and repeat.
- If you make a mistake, drop back down a notch and rebuild.

3. Practice in small chunks, not whole scales
If one part of a scale always trips you up (often a tricky finger crossing or a register change), don't keep restarting the whole thing. Isolate the rough three or four notes, loop just those slowly, then expand outward once they're smooth. You'll fix the weak link instead of reinforcing it.
4. Change the rhythm to break plateaus
When a scale feels stuck, practice it in rhythm groupings — play in short bursts with tiny pauses, like two-note or four-note groups, then shift where the pause lands. This forces clean speed inside each burst and tricks your hands into moving faster between them. After a few minutes, play it straight again and it usually feels easier.
